The Horse Course (VME-4906) is an online undergraduate course (3 credits) designed for students planning careers in Veterinary Medicine or Veterinary Technical Programs.

The Horse

This course covers many important topics in the domesticated horse field including reproduction, anatomy, the musculoskeletal system, GI physiology, preventative health care, as well as current research.

The Horse Overview

While the Horse Course  is offered through the University of Florida, many students that take this class attend other Colleges and Universities.

Many Colleges and Universities have slightly different schedules. In order to accommodate these different schedules, the class has been designed to be run in an asynchronous manner (i.e. students  have weekly assignments, but do not need to log into the class at any specific time during the day)

Course Information

Objectives

At the end of this course students will be able to:

• Describe some common health issues in horses
• Recognize at a basic level healthy versus unhealthy conditions in horses
• Recognize the critical components of the scientific method in peer reviewed journal articles
• Characterize and distinguish major aspects of equine natural history, anatomy, and physiology

Syllabus

There are two classes offered for the Horse Course: an undergraduate level class (VME-4906) and a graduate level class (VME-6934). Both classes are 3 credit classes.

Undergraduate class (VME-4906):

• The Horse syllabus-Summer 2024
• The Horse Course will also be offered in the Fall semester of 2024 (runs August 22nd-December 4TH) and registration for the Fall term will begin this June.

A graduate level Horse Class (VME-6934) is also available.

• The main difference between the two classes is that the graduate level class also has a writing assignment. Contact Dr. Larkin if you would like more information about the graduate level class.

Tuition

Undergraduate class (VME-4906)
For students from the state of Florida (that can claim Florida residency), the tuition rate is $511.74 ($170.58 per credit hour). 

For students outside the state of Florida, the tuition rate is $1,129.20 ($376.40 per credit hour).

The above prices include all UF fees as well as all of the fees to use the HonorLock Service for the three tests. All reading material will be provided within the class and no additional textbooks are required.

Graduate class (VME-6934)
The tuition rate for the graduate level class is the same for students from the state of Florida and students outside the state of Florida. The tuition rate is $1,614.96.  ($538.32 per credit hour). 

This price includes all UF fees as well as all of the fees to use the HonorLock Service for the three tests. All reading material will be provided within the class and no additional textbooks are required.

Prerequisite(s):

Undergraduate class (VME-4906): Students should be in their Sophomore year, or higher, to take this class.  Students need to have taken a minimum of 4 science and/or math courses** before you enroll in this course (courses from other Colleges/Universities can substitute for the following classes).  Of these 4 courses, at least two of them need to be in the biology field (examples of some biology classes include, but are not limited to the following: a biology for majors class, zoology,  anatomy, physiology, etc.). The other two courses can also be in the biology field, or they can also be in other fields such as chemistry, physics, or math.

**Note that you do not need to take a class in each of these fields, just four classes total.

Graduate class (VME-6934): Students at other colleges and Universities can also sign up for this class. Students should be juniors, seniors, or a post-baccalaureate.
